Bob, my recommendation was not Spar varnish, but a pour-on two-part resin called Enviro-tex Lite. There are instructions for using this stuff to refinish the dash at Jim Werner's Big Healey Adventure

I had the same exact situation on my car. I stripped the glove box side and lightly sanded the veneer with some 400 to be sure it was smooth. I mixed Cherry stain and Walnut stain 50/50 and wiped it
