IMO, you have to go completely through the system. Brakes are just too important, and after 20 years probably all the parts will be gunked-up with degenerated fluid. - Remove, clean and inspect all

Yep. Think most American cars--older ones anyway--have iron cylinders. BTW, my BJ8's original M/Cs were aluminum, but the newer replacements were iron (rear slaves are Al). There's some disagreement
