The starter solenoid has started to click but after several tries the starter kicks in and does it't thing. I notice that the ammeter does not go negative when the solenoid clicks. Would this indicat

Take the selenoid apart. You will see the Copper washer that the contact touches. It will be all burned on that side. Turn the copper or Brass washer over, and you have a new, clean, contact surface

Could also be a low battery or one on the way out. How do you take the solenoid apart? Mine seem to be crimped . Mike try starter seconds

It is also possible that the brushes in your starter are worn and could stand replacing. Since you have a spare solenoid I would start by swapping it out to see if that fixes it, a lot easier job tha
