If I'm not mistaken, early chokes did use a friction device. The later chokes knobs were designed to be twisted 90 degrees to lock it in place. I don't know the transition year -- Original Message -

There are 2 types of choke cables. The early ones used friction and the later types had to be twisted to the right to hold the choke in position. You probably have the latter. Mike
