5th gear neutral is pretty common. On earlier transmission the big nut at the back can loosen up and that can cause big problems. On later 5 speeds there are 2 big nuts at the back that are tightened

Are you verifying CONDITION or RATIO? If just ratio, then just stick it in gear, turn the input shaft exactly 10 rotations and count how many output shaft revolutions you get. -- John John F Sandhoff
