The R16 hits max torque somewhere about 4100 rpm. Best fuel economy is around 3200-3600. This according to the factory shop manual. (2L top torque roughly about 4200 SU and 4800 Solex.) My 2L turns

If it bothers you and you normally drive freeways, you could swap out the ring & pinion for a 3.70 set of gears from a 2000. That would slow down the motor a little bit. Paul Ohio country in goes. a
