I wired up a relay to turn on the compressor when the ignition is on pretty much as John suggested. There is a wire on the starter solenoid that is hot when the ignition is on so I used that to trigg

Larry, You may not really need a relay. I don't know how much current your compressor takes. But my rational for using a relay is: 1. I'm assuming that the compressor takes quite a bit of current. Sa

Hooking the compressor up so that it only comes on when the ignition is on sounds like a good idea. Where did you connect it? The current load is high so I am not sure where to attach it without blow
