I always cross the front straps. At the rear, I try to find a fixed location to tie down to (sometimes this gets creative or needs some of those T-toggle eyes that Bob Tunnell has available for purch

Sid hit on the gist of it -- crossing the straps puts a lateral "fix" on the car in addition to the fore-aft fix that running the straps straight would give you. If you're running very short straps,
