Very early TR6 used both, but a 76 only had a vacuum advance. Typically auto distributors have an advance, maybe both, but never a retard only. Greg CD6250L vacuum advance or vacuum retard.

Actually, USA-spec Triumphs from about 1972-on used distributors with only vacuum retard. The retard unit was routed to a vacuum port that only pulled a vacuum at idle. This served to retard the idle

In tuning in to the Triumph BBS list, there was a discussion of a distributor modification by Richard Good. The vacuum unit is moved to the opposite side so that it provides advance instead of retard

Seth, the correct dist on the 76 uses a vacuum retard unit. Under load you get maximum spark advance (10 deg BTDC), but when you take your foot off the gas while coasting the retard kicks in to reduc

All this talk about vacuum retard has me wondering. Do you need to adjust your timing if the retard isn't working? Should the timing be set statically or dynamically. If so, what should it be set to.
