I have done this with great success. I believe the instructions had me install the thermostat in the upper hose at the point it enters the radiator. This makes sense as it's a good measure of coolant

I will second Dick's comments as I had the same problem after shaving and raising compression to 10.1:1. Removing the head and having the sharp edges carefully rounded off cured the pinging AND run-o
