Thanks to all who responded to "TR4 or TR4A." I have come to the conclusion
that I have a '63 TR4 which was not titled until 1964. At some point in time,
the engine was replaced with a '65 TR4A engine and yes it does have the four
into two into one exhaust manifold. It also has what I believe are the later
SU carbs (the air cleaners are not offset & have brass dashpots). Are these
SU HS6? It also has the old style radiator with the long neck with the hole
for the hand crank.
The car definitely has the TR4 body and ladder frame not the IRS. There were
two trunks that came with the car but neither one original. There are also no
side markers. Also, the number that I found on the diff must be a part
number. It was mentioned that there is a CT number on top of the housing. I
don't see anyway of reading the number short of removing the diff or removing
the body! Any suggestions?
My next step will be to contact John Macartney at the Heritage Motor Centre
to find out what I have to do to get a search of the commission number from
the body number. I need to get the title for the car straightened out before
I sink a lot of time and money into it. Next I need to decide upon what type
of restoration I want to do. I want to turn the car into a fair weather daily
driver. As I have mentioned earlier, the car had an electrical fire in the
engine compartment on the left side firewall near the wiper motor. I will
need to rewire the car as well as redo the brake and clutch cylinders as well
as many other things. The car will need to be repainted as the drivers door
and fender and hood have fire damage. I was told that the car ran when the
fire started but I don't know what condition the engine is in. If I wanted to
do a frame off restoration, now would be the time to do it.
It is good to know there is a place like this list that I can go to for good
help on my new project.
