1965 MUSTANG VINTAGE RACE CAR SHELBY CLONE FOR SALE

With much sadness, I have decided to get out of vintage racing, having
lived a great dream of racing with some of the most fabulous cars and
people on some of the country?s historic tracks. That means my 1965
Mustang fastback prepared to Shelby GT 350 specifications needs a new
home.

The car started life as a V8 fastback built in Ford?s San Jose,
California, plant. When I bought it in 1992, it had been a race car
for an indeterminate number of years, owned by a lawyer in Phoenix who
damaged the driver's side in a race incident at Firebird Raceway.

After I purchased it, the car was restored and upgraded by Larry Pond
at Gemini Racing in Chandler, Ariz. The original color of white with
blue stripes was changed to Candy Apple red with Wimbledon white
stripes. The body incorporates the R-model front valance and the heavy
side interior vents were removed and replaced with riveted aluminum
panels, as was done with the original '65 Shelby R models. The vented
plexiglass R model rear window also is on board.

The car also has the R model plexiglass and aluminum side windows with
pull-up straps and aluminum interior door panels. A 1966 dash panel
was installed to allow for added gauges, and the 1965 oil pressure and
tachometer pod was installed on the center dashboard.

A Cobra Imola carbon-fiber race seat is in the driver?s position, with
an older Cobra race seat in the passenger position. The interior
retains full carpeting and other standard Mustang items. The rear has
the Shelby package shelf and a four-point, vintage correct roll bar
imprinted with an SCCA log book number.

One other important change to note: Because of my handicap, the
original four-speed manual was replaced with a period-correct C4
automatic transmission that was rebuilt to race standards by Hughes
Performance of Phoenix. It's a three-speed manual shift with a B&M
ratchet shifter.

The car can easily be converted back to a four-speed manual, although
a spare, race-prepped C4 automatic will be included with the sale of
this car.

Here are some other details:
The engine is a Mexican block Ford 302-cubic-inch V8 built
in 2002 by Holman Automotive in North Carolina, heir to the historic
Holman-Moody Ford racing fame. It has an Edelbrock Victor Jr. intake, a
Holly carburetor, aluminum GT 40 heads, balanced crankshaft, solid-lifter
roller-rocker valvetrain with a Crane camshaft, as well as aluminum
underdrive pulleys, an aluminum water pump with an adjustable thermostat
and MSD ignition with a 7000 rpm limiter. It's rated at 425 horsepower
@ 6500 rpm.
The front suspension has the proper lowered A-arms, with
period-correct orange adjustable Koni shocks all around.
Period-correct Kelsey-Hayes front disc brakes with large
Lincoln drum brakes at the back with a cockpit brake bias adjustor.
                  Wheels are 15-inch Torque-Thrust D?s, with 225-60-15 Hoosier
Street TDs mounted. An additional set of the same wheels carrying an unused
set of Hoosiers will be included in the sale.
Welded-in subframe connectors for extra chassis stiffness.
                  A 15-gallon, trunk-mounted fuel cell.
                  Currie 32-spline rear axles.
NASCAR-style nine-inch Detroit Locker rear with a polished
3:83-1 ring and pinion.
Three-compartment (engine, interior, fuel cell) Halon manual
fire extinguisher system.
Cool shirt chilled water pump system, as well as a cool-air
helmet induction system (shirt, but not helmet, included)
                  Wired for two-way radio communication.
                  Removable race-style steering wheel.

The car's vintage race history is extensive. I have raced it in the
following groups: Sports Car Club of America, VARA, HSR and VDCA. The
car has raced at these tracks: Phoenix International Raceway, Willow
Springs Raceway, Road Atlanta, Sebring International Raceway,
Miami-Homestead Speedway, Mororso Motorsports Park, Daytona
International Speedway, Roebling Road, Virginia International Raceway
and Watkins Glen International Raceway.

Now for the caveats. This is a race car, not a trailer
queen. It looks great from 10 feet, but close inspection will reveal
nicks and bumps acquired over the course of about 50 race weekends. It
is not street legal, lacking turn signals and needing leaded racing
fuel to run properly. The car was last raced in June at Watkins
Glen. The engine is strong and the only mechanical problem I am aware
of is a tendency to push a small amount of oil out of the left
breather cap at very high rpm. It has been professionally maintained
by Performance Tech in Hallandale Beach, Fla., for the last 10
years. Flush the brakes and go racing tomorrow. It has a current SCCA
tech inspection and needs nothing to qualify for most vintage groups.

The price is $25,000, and the car is offered as-is, where-is without
any warranties written or implied.
