Peter, I have often wondered if I did the club a favor or just made a
big fool of myself. I still think it had to be done because a secret
little group of about 5 people, people in power, were trying to give the
SCCA pro racing away to USAC.
At the time USAC was run by a bunch of dottering old codgers that were
about as forward thinking and progressive as Boulder Dam.
The series that they wanted to give away were the Can-AM, Trans-AM and
Formula 5000.
At that time the board decreed that to get a pro event a track had to
run at lease one club event, and that was the only reason we were
running at Mid Ohio. Les hated the SCCA, the Board, etc. He would have
loved to run 3 pro races a year, period.
All these years later the Board gave pro racing away anyway, but at
least we still have some marginal control.
The article in Sports Car is pretty accurate. That was a period of hell
for me!!!
Cheers to all, Larry Dent
