Brock,

It is possible that the very earliest of spitfire had aluminum bellhousings.
However, early Heralds were shipped with them. Surprisingly I had just
recently bought a 65 Herald that had a slightly earlier engine and tranny in
it. It had the later style of of aluminum bellhousing. To my knowledge there
are at least 2 probably 3 types of aluminum bellhousing. The earlier style had
a thinner flange where it bolts to the engine and was of weaker construction.
The later bellhousings were much beafier on the flanges and look virtually
identical to mk1 thru mk3 spitfire bellhousings.

If you're running a single rail gearbox (aka 1500 style) you will need to do
some grinding on the bellhousing to all clearance for the shift rail. Just got
done doing the same thing to our later style aluminum bellhousing last week.
Works like a charm. Weighs about 8 lbs instead of the 32 lbs of the steel
bellhousing.

I do believe Scott Harper of Team Triumph 330-392-7176 might have a bellhousing
for you. Give him a try and tell him I sent you!!

Good luck,

Brad

PS, if you're looking for a 4.55 rear end gearset the early Herald 948s had
them....
