This solution is a bit radical, but late model BMW's incorporate a
pyrotechnic switch for battery disconnect in the event of a crash. A signal
from the air bag sensors detonate this device, which literally blows the
battery connection in a serious crash. The system even has the smarts to
unlock the doors before this occurs. It does pose a problem if someone needs
to roll down the windows, though! Maybe a bit too much technology deployed
here. I don't think anyone here is going to retrofit their vintage cars
with airbag sensors.
