Use the Toyota High Speed alternator.  It can be found on Toyota Tercels, 
1985 and later (as well as many other Asian cars - I found one on a Chevy 
Sprint) at any salvage yard for about $15 used.  They are internally 
regulated and will need only a one wire hook-up to the battery and a switched 
ignition wire to excite the rotor/magnet.  You can hook-up the idiot warning 
light or run an amp meter as a charge indicator.  These units are bullet 
proof and are Toyota's recomendation for retrofit to earlier cars with 
enternal regulators.  They are made by Nipon-Denzo and can be identified by a 
squareish sheet metal cover on the rear of the unit to cover the regulator 
and diodes.  They have an internal fan giving the case a nicely curved look. 
They will be found with both types of pulleys which can be easily changed to 
one that works with your car,
