av gas

We ued to run av gas in formula vees a few years back. The explination I was 
given was that since airplane engines are not high compression engines it 
worked well in a low compression vee as it ran a bit cooler. Didn't make any 
HP difference , just cooler.
But ??????????????
Years ago when as a kid I worked at Buchanan field I used to use some in my 
MG TD with out any noticable difference ,other than it was free !!
