But Yunick denies ever building a 7/8ths car. He allows that it wasn't
"zactly" like the original and certainly didn't set on the frame in the
same manner as the original, but it was (he sez) full-size. He also
will admit that he could drive the car "from Daytona to Jacksonville"
without a fuel tank, seeing as how nine gallons of fuel were held in
the fuel line/s. ANd, yes, it did have a partial belly pan, but the
rules didn't say anything about that, either. In fact, he showed up at
Daytona with stock rear wheel openings, and the other racers howled
that it was illegal...that they had to be radiused (sp?). "Show me
where in the rule book," sez Smokey. So he qualifies the car on or
near the pole, they commences to cut the wheel openings so pit stops
were possible. When they started raising hell with him he told them,
"Geez, you guys seemed so upset that they were enclosed, I just thought
I open them up to make you-all happy."

I recall the story of Smoky Unick who built a 7/8 th scale stock car for
Daytona.

When the templates would not fit, Smoky said, Hell put the templates on
that there car in the parking lot. Sure enough, the templates did not
fit and the tech inspector figured the templates had been cut wrong.

Problem was, Smoky had built a matching street machine and parked it
right where it was sure to be measured too.

Smoky stories make most "urban legends" sound tame.
