John,
   Simon and Myles (God bless you Miles, and you drive a Brit car, too!) are
right on the mark with the suggestion for an Alfa. Not only does the car
have a 5-speed, good brakes, all-aluminum twin-cam engine, but it's eligible
for those snooty clubs like HMSA, CSRG, VSCCA (if it is earlier than 1960)
and VDCA. The cars that are produced before 1960 can most easily be
dual-purpose (street-track) because technically, they should be close to
that spec anyway. I'd like to suggest something else if you're not worried
about clubs that take earlier cars.
     How 'bout a Fiat! An early 124 Spider would be terrific! A 1438 cc twin
cam engine, five speed gearbox and four wheel disc, all STOCK! Cheap parts
($15 brake rotors, $65 calipers, $15 head gaskets {you won't need 'em})
They're great cars, and if you put the 1608 cc engine in, you can even beat
a bunch of MGB's and TR's! {it's getting hot in here!}

-Peter Krause (started life with a Fiat 850 Spider, and have NEVER been
sorry, even with an Alfa V-12 Formula 1 car!)
