A few more words on the Rally. As some may recall 1996 was the
Centenary of the abolishment of the RED FLAG Rule. -It was a simple
quirk/rule that essentially prevented cars traveling on public
highways faster than about three miles/hr. ( A man had to wave a red
flag while walking in front of a car warning others of its proximity.)
This year celebrates the centenary of the Royal Auto club (RAC). The
route FROM Hyde Park through the center of London passes some historic
land marks. The Drive TO Hyde Park passes a very important landmark
as well. This landmark is less well known but has some unique
significance. Some of you may know this place by its proper name and
if so please let me know. It is called the "Hanging Tree" site near
Marble Arch. Centuries ago convicted criminals were ceremoniously
taken to this large tree and dispatched. So what! -well ever hear of
the terms "One for the Road" and "On the Wagon"? The story goes that
those convicted were alotted one drink from the local pub -while being
carted to the tree. The driver of the carriage was required to be
sober..("One for the Road" and "On the wagon" respectively..). I
think the name of the Tree is ?Twilindary Tree..?
