Vintage Racers,
I was recently informed by another VARA member that it has
finally been decided that plastic fuel cells, even when encased
in steel, would no longer meet the safety requirements for VARA.
VARA for some time has put a formal FIA requirement on cells,
and it is my understanding that the plastic cells could not meet
FIA requirements.
Informally, it would seem that reasonably encased plastic cells
were acceptable, until now.
I was also told that the plastic cells would be grandfathered for
a short period of time.
Anyone have firsthand info?
For obvious reasons, I am opting to get my cell updated now,
which sent me shopping. I found the following manufacturers:
1) RCI "Plastic Cell"
2) JazI "Plastic Cell"
3) Fuel Safe
4) ATL
The cost range is considerable.
RCI and Jaz, are out of the picture, as both make plastic cells, that are
not FIA certified.
Fuel Safe and ATL both claim FIA certs, but ATL offers a low cost cell
that is both FIA approved AND used the roto molded "read plastic" cell.
Fuel Safe looks like the best bang for buck, as the sportsman cell has
a real bladder, and runs cheaper than the plastic ATL cell/bladder.
What am I to think here?
Both the ATL cheapo, and the Fuel Safe sportsman runs 4 bills for my
generic application.
Should I even consider the ATL cell?
Conventional wisdom said that plastic is bad, is it good now?
If anyone has purchased either, I'd be very interested in hearing from
you.
as purchase time is really close.
