Hello all,
The recent discussions concerning photodocumentation
and "Haybales and Asphalt" remind me that I should describe
the goals of the Watkins Glen Motor Racing Research Library.
An extension of the existing 1000 item rare and reference
book collection housed in the Watkins Glen Public Library,
the proposed $850,000 Research Library seeks to collect
"materials representing the documentary heritage of Twentieth Century motor
racing, highlighting Sports Car, Formula I, NASCAR and Vintage car racing.
The library seeks for its archives the personal papers of drivers,
journalists, and authors; rare books, serial publications, and reference
books pertaining to drivers, cars, races and the history of motor racing;
the historical records and newsletters of clubs and motor racing teams and
corporations; and historical photographs, movie films, videos, memorabilia
and oral histories."
We have made a good start in collecting archival material,
books, and videos. The Library is scheduled to open in September 1998.
In addition to a website including photographs, the Library will
feature commercial and personal films/videos from the past,
and will be open to the public for browsing, research, and film viewing.
I'd be glad to send along a brochure describing the Library
to anyone asking for one (email me directly).
regards,
