Marc....
re your VW Beetle racer proposal.
Also, in response to various comments from others re Historic Touring
Cars.
Down here in Australia we have Group N for Classic Touring Cars, split
into 3 categories:
Group Na = pre'58 (and approved run-ons) Classic Saloons
Group Nb = pre'65 Production Touring Cars
Group Nc = 1965-72 Touring Cars
On 23/24 November the HSRCA (Historic Sports and Racing Car
Association) is running an all-Historic Race Meeting at Wakefield Park,
near Goulburn, 3 hours South of Sydney - if you are around drop by and
watch the action (it should also be captured by SBS for their SpeedWeek
TV programme).
Anyway, the reason for this mail is to give you an outline of the Group
N entries, which have yet to close, as follows:
1953 Holden FX (a genuine "Humpy" Holden)
1955 Morris Oxford (that's me - not necessarily oldest and not
necessarily slowest)
1955 Jaguar MkVIIM (2 tonnes of awesome rocking and rolling)
1957 Jaguar MkIs (including the original "Grey Pussy")
1957/8 Morris Majors (Australian variants on Wolseley 1500 theme)
1957/8 Ford Zephyr MkIIs (deceptively quick, but interesting
handling)
1957 Morris Minor (indecently quick)
1958 VW Beetle 1200 (Marc, if you want more info I'll give you a
contact)
1960/3 Jaguar MkIIs (some even driven to the circuit)
1963-7 Cooper S (umpteen of the ultimate pedal bins)
1964 Ford Cortina MkI GT (see, they didn't all rust away)
1964 Ford Cortina MkI Lotus (the quick Dagenham Dustbin)
1964 Holden EHs (clasic Australian race cars of the period)
1964 Ford Zephyr MkIIIs (still going strong)
1964 Vauxhall Velox (don't ever share a garage with this car -
you'll go deaf)
1967 Alfa Romeo Giulia TIs (couple of nifty Italian jobs)
1971 Ford Falcon XY GT (superbly presented, V8 sounds great, and
goes very hard)
1972/4 Holden Torana XU-1s (the archetypal Australian race car of
the period - much loved by the crowds at Bathurst)
As you can see quite a mix and with more entries to come we should be
split into two grids - thank goodness as it saves me being blown off
the track as the fast cars go past, and, it gives me a chance to get
out of my car and run to the fence to watch the quick cars racing.
So, old tin tops (and old drivers) are alive and well "down under" and
we run with the three categories and capacity classes so everybody has
a pretty good time because they settle in with their own crowd. Also,
to pick up Myles's point - the social side is pretty good. To pick up
Dick's point we are (nearly) all racing for the sheer hell (fun) of it
- if we had big egos and/or large bank balances we'd race in a
different category.
...regards....Andrew Pursey (1955 Morris Oxford racing as car no: 55
in Group N)
