Dave:
As you may have found out by this point, your questions of "what is
legal" depend heavily upon the organizing body being asked. In the
Southeast we have three organizations running regular "Vintage" events:
HSR, SCCA and SVRA. In level of modifications allowed, I would list them
in the same order.
HSR lets you do what you want to cars of any age and then puts you in a
class with similarly-prepared cars. SCCA accepts cars manufacture prior
to January 1, 1973 and allows preparation that would have been permitted
and available to race the car in the year of manufacture. SVRA also
adheres (for the most part) to cars made prior to 1973 and also requires
them to have race history during those years; few exceptions are made.
Fuel cells are required by all if the car is truly "race" prepared. Roll
cages are highly recommended (without attaching to the suspension pick-up
points) but are not required - only a roll bar is required. Window nets
and on-board fire extinguishers are also required. Drivers equipment
must meet current, prevailing standards (Snell SA-90 helmets,
double-layer nomex or equivalent, etc.).
The biggest difference is attitude. Vintage racing puts the fun factor
far above the drive to "win". Considering your questions were all
related to car preparation rather than event availability and location or
the philosophy in general, perhaps you should evaluate your "needs" in
this endeavor and choose a venue to suit that purpose. Hope it ends up
being the need for good sport and social pleasures, like the rest of us.
Good luck, wherever it takes you!!!
