I agree that shimming the rear hub bearings is a good way of setting up the
hubs. I can also vouch for the original method. Nine years ago I rebuilt my
rear hubs with squash tubes. I faced them and installed them at .003" end
play. Since then the car has completed 18,000 miles ,150+ auto-x's, lots of
hillclimbs and time trials without any problems or signs of wear.
