The problem is the main shaft that plugs into the front of the overdrive =
unit is different between the all synchro gear boxes and the non-synchro =
1st gear box and are not interchangeable.

When I put OD on my 59 TR3A about 10 years ago I found out how rare the =
non-synchro mainshafts were and ended up buying a TR6 tranny and putting =
the OD on that as the OD I had came with the synchro mainshaft.

A Type OD in a tr6 box will absolutely bolt right into TR3, 3A, 4, or =
4a. Best upgrade. My original TR3A tranny is nice but doesn=E2=80=99t =
shift as well as tr6 and not as beefy when it comes to parts and design. =
If I had to replace I=E2=80=99d do the 6 tranny with a type. Jim =

Correct me if I=E2=80=99m wrong, but I don=E2=80=99t think you can. If =
I=E2=80=99m wrong, that=E2=80=99s totally the right answer!!!

Anyone know the answer to this???

Why don=E2=80=99t you put the overdrive from the TR3 gearbox on the TR6 =
gearbox ?

=20

The TR6 gearbox is a better overall unit, so if it were me, I=E2=80=99d =
opt for it in a car with the upgrades you list.

=20

I have 5 TRs and all of them have TR6 gearboxes with A-types.

I recently acquired a car with a TR3 overdrive that probably needs to be =
rebuilt. I was wondering =E2=80=93 is the non synchro first gear really =
an issue? =20

=20

The car has a TR4 engine anyway and I have a nice TR6 tranny (non =
overdrive). We do not care about originality; rather we are going for =
performance with a mild cam, 89 mm pistons, lightened flywheel, etc

=20

Am trying to decide if I should sell the TR3 tran to fund the upgrade on =
the TR6 tran

=20

both the engine and tran were out of the car; its going to need some =
work anyway
