I think 165 R15 is pretty much considered the contemporary standard for
TR3&3A. I use this size in the Vredestein Sprint Classic tires, purchased
though Summit Racing, no driving complaints but it would be a tight squeeze
if you use it for your spare. My PO put a 145R15 Kumho in the spare box
and it fits quite well, never had to put it on the ground but am sure it
would be very serviceable in an emergency for a short period.
If you are going to something larger, Andrew's creative solution should
would be your best answer.

Depends what you mean by "best": the car originally came with 155 x 15, but
these are no longer available (as far as I know). So most people go with
165 x 80 x 15, the only problem being that it is difficult if not impossible
to fit an inflated tire this size in the spare tire compartment of a TR3.
On one of my TR3s I have 195 x 65 x 15 tires on 6" wheels and they fit the
car fine. I removed the trunk floor in order to be able to carry a similar
spare - see pic.
I have heard of people going with even larger tires, but then you can get
into issues with the tires rubbing on the fenders.
