Hi - After about a 10 year hiatus due to health issues, I'm back on the lis=
t.=C2=A0 It is good to see that this list is still going strong, and was in=
awe that the Dot 3 v. Dot 5 controversy still exists.=C2=A0=20
I have a 1954 TR2 longdoor, TS3388L.=C2=A0 I rebuilt every system (brakes, =
electrical, fuel, cooling) 10-15 years ago.=C2=A0 I did not have to open up=
the engine, transmission or rear end, as they seemed to be working just fi=
ne.=C2=A0 It is close to original; although it does have a TR3 engine and d=
isc brakes on the front (I didn't do it).=C2=A0 Everything from the transmi=
ssion back is original.
When I parked it, I, unfortunately, did nothing.=C2=A0 So, I know that I wi=
ll need to redo and rebuild all of the various systems.=C2=A0 I am hoping t=
hat I do not have to remove the gas tank again, as I parked it with a full =
tank of gas.=C2=A0 At some point, I put Marvel Mystery Oil in the cylinders=
.
I drove it many miles all over northern California.=C2=A0 My last drive was=
up to Lassen Park.=C2=A0 It ran fine; although it developed a leak in one =
of the rear wheel seals.=C2=A0 I replaced both seals, and then both leaked =
(par normal for me).=C2=A0 At that point, it was parked.
Now, I am back to it.=C2=A0 I am starting with the seals.=C2=A0 Someone sug=
gested that driving it with the original (?) seals caused a scaring on the =
axle and that I needed to put a sleeve on the axle to ensure a good seal. D=
oes that make any sense?=C2=A0 Is this something that I can do, or do I nee=
d to take the axles in to a machine shop?
The right rear brake drum came off with minimal effort.=C2=A0 I have not be=
en able to get the left brake drum off.=C2=A0 It has the original 9" drums.=
=C2=A0 I have lightly tapped all the way around, to no avail.=C2=A0 (BTW, I=
did remove the 2 set screws, and was able to back off the shoes, so it spi=
ns relatively freely.)=C2=A0 I did knock a chip off the drum.=C2=A0 I hope =
that doesn't affect the balance of that wheel?=C2=A0 I have liberally spray=
ed penetrating oil in every crevice I could find.=C2=A0 I have not been bac=
k out to the shop since applying the penetrating oil, due to the poor AQI a=
nd heavy smoke from the wildfires in northern California.=C2=A0=20
One more question:=C2=A0 I have 2 sets of near new brake shoes, but they we=
re soaked with oil.=C2=A0 Somewhere I heard that burying them in a tub of k=
itty litter would draw out the oil.=C2=A0 Is this correct?=C2=A0 An old wiv=
es tale?
So, any advice from the combined wisdom of this group is greatly appreciate=
d.
