The new registration letter came out halfway into the year so as to even out=
demand for the new models that were usually available starting in September=
/ October. Everyone wanted the =E2=80=98M=E2=80=99 reg. cars rather than th=
e =E2=80=98L=E2=80=99 regs. If the letter change also coincided with new mod=
els, then literally no-one would buy the old stock. Growing up next to Longb=
ridge I remember they would retool and restock for the new models during ind=
ustrial fortnight in August while the plant was also being cleaned and repai=
red.
