 The same thing happened to a friend of mine but he was driving an early 70=
's Buick.=C2=A0 That hood was so heavy and stout that even though he was do=
ing highway speeds, it just opened up to full extension.=C2=A0 He pulled ov=
er, closed the hood and continued on.

I may have told this story before... In a previous life, I worked for a Vol=
kswagen dealer as a Service Technician ("schmieraffe").=C2=A0 Most of the c=
ars we saw were newer, but occasionally, there was one that had seen a roug=
h life.=C2=A0 This day it was a 1977 VW Rabbit.=C2=A0 =C2=A0I forget the co=
mplaint, but I brought it into my bay and opened the hood by untying the co=
at hanger that held it shut.=C2=A0 That was the only securement for it...
After inspecting whatever I was inspecting, I got the customer to go for a =
test drive with me.

We set out around the block, me confidently behind the wheel.=C2=A0 Our tes=
t drive route left the dealer=C2=A0on Piedmont Road in Atlanta, turned righ=
t through a residential neighborhood, then came out on Pharr Road in trendy=
 Buckhead....
As I pulled out on Pharr Road, I wound it up to the speed limit, listening =
for the noise I was tracing...all of the sudden, the hood went straight up,=
 hung for a second by the ground strap attached to it while I desperately t=
ried to look between bonnet and cowl to see where=C2=A0I was going while I =
slowed down.=C2=A0 After an eternity, the hood sailed out of sight behind u=
s.
Miraculously, in busy Atlanta traffic, there was nobody in the way behind u=
s.=C2=A0 I stopped the car and we got out and went back to retrieve the hoo=
d.=C2=A0 Other than one bent rear corner, it didn't=C2=A0look any worse tha=
n before.=C2=A0 I looked at the customer, they looked at me, they shrugged,=
 I shrugged, and we set it back in place and drove on back to the shop.=C2=
=A0 No words were ever said.

When I released the car back to them, though, that coat hanger was *tight*.
