Coal is mostly carbon, slag is what's left over after the carbon (and anything else that will burn) has been burned out and the residue melted by the heat. Coal slag has it's own hazards, but they have been more recently discovered and may not be as severe as sand. I also saw a cool video recently on laser rust removal: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ACGSzBXKONo Still a bit pricey, but might come down.
