"Coal slag" is not the same thing as coal.  Coal is mostly carbon, slag is
what's left over after the carbon (and anything else that will burn) has
been burned out and the residue melted by the heat.

Coal slag has it's own hazards, but they have been more recently discovered
and may not be as severe as sand.  See for example:

If it worries you, look into electrolytic rust removal.  I also saw a cool

Still a bit pricey, but might come down.  Or, I found a 50 watt LED laser
diode on flea-bay for about $100 ...
