Hi,
I'll also toss out this, based on experience with a number of organizations.
Clubs like SCCA see fairly consistent participation levels of about 10% of
membership. So, with 65,000 members, SCCA has around 6500 members that
participate on a regular basis. There are also a number of non-regular
participants, but putting a number on that is fairly difficult. For example,
there are members that join to do a track day or autocross, try it and then
decide to walk away. But they are not active beyond that. There are a few
local-ish specialized clubs that see higher participation rates, but a lot of
them have members that are in other clubs (like SCCA or NASA or VRG or
whatever), so excepting cases where the local club is the ONLY venue available,
there are folks with dual club affiliation, so you can't just add up all the?
club memberships to get a total because the numbers would be skewed. And even
if you included NHRA (which is at 65000+ members) and some of the roundy-round
groups like local NASCAR, if there's 100000 "participants" in the USA, I would
be surprised.
Based on the population, the number is pretty small. Like .02% if not less.
This is an interesting question, for sure.

While I don?t have any numbers, you are quite correct.
?
Once, long ago some of my SCCA buddies and I had a conversation with an
engineer from Ford at one of our regional meetings.? My question to him was,
why not put BIG disc brakes on the Mustang?
He said that less than 2% of owners take part in any organized competitive
events, hence there is no incentive to tailor the Mustang to ?our? (enthusiast)
market.?? Of course there are now very good Mustang models out there, but his
assertion still rings true.
?
I?d say that less than two percent of all car owners take part in ANY organized
competitive events of any kind, so racing would be a tiny subset of that 2%.

Subject: [Fot] Driver Census?FOT,
Would anyone want to venture a guess as to how many drivers there are in the
USA who actually race: vintage organizations, SCCA, Indy, NASCAR, IMSA,
amateur, professional, etc.? Not track day, autocross, etc.? I?m interested in
calculating the percentage of the population that participated in our world. I
would guess that it is a tiny fraction.
