Hello,
3M 08008 Black Super Weatherstrip. This stuff is brutal strong. .....and it has
a shortish working time. I would, since appearance is not a strong issue use
this stuff to "glue" a patch on the inside. Be careful to protect the interior
from spills or drips.

I got a surprise today when a brief rain forced me out of my lunch diner to put
up the top. Some debris from a mouse nest flew out of a fold and there was a
nasty stain. Worst of all, there were two little holes and one large one (about
1" x 2") chewed in the vinyl top (not the window). I realized that I hadn't
opened the convertible top in over a year, and clearly that was a mistake what
with the little inhabitants of my detached garage near the woods. I will go
after the little buggers with traps and poison and maybe the black racer that
joined me during a woodworking project earlier in the week. I have had snakes
take up residence in the past (occasional shed skins visible in the loft), and
I let them be.
My immediate goal is to get my rain protection back. Because I seldom deploy
the top, I do not care much about having a pristine appearance. I am
considering just trying to patch the holes (if I can first clear up the
yellowed window with Plast-X). Amazon has a product (Gear Aid Jeep Soft Top
Repair Kit, $21) that has much better reviews than others, but it seems to come
only in black, and my top is tan. Has anyone used this or another product, and
is there one in tan? I suspect I could get a shop to do the job, but I'm pretty
far away from any such shop, and I don't want to have to detach the top or
leave the car somewhere distant. I really have very little to lose by giving it
a try. If it doesn't go well, I drive to a shop or buy a new top.

Tim Gaines

Subject: [TR] MISS and other stuff
FYI to brian kemp and randall.? Borrowed a friends meter and found that my
battery was putting out 12.8 volts instead of the 51.? Dunno why my meter
failed me but must be worthless.? I had put it away still turned on instead of
shutting it off.? I'm wondering if that burned something out or ruined the
meter.? It has been several years since I used it.
Anyway all is well.? Update on another issue in the past.? I had complained of
llittle heat coming from a new heater I had put in the tr-3, which had been
overhauled so had clean passages ect.? I had routed the outlet heater hose up
over the heater which I think caused a partial or full air lock.? Seems not
enough pressure to take the water straight up and over.? This past winter I
switched the hose to down under the heater making it much easier for the water
to pass and circulate.? I'm getting much hotter air from the heater and also
think the car is running cooler than before.? Just a note to anyone having the
same problem or issue.
Someone mentioned getting a good job done at small independent shops.? I have
found that some of these places can do excellent work for a fraction of the
cost of "well known" shops.? I had an Amishman who builds/repairs buggys cover
my side screens? and did a great job.? If memory serves me it was around 50
bucks apiece.? Also had a flywheel shaved for much less than 100.? It does take
some searching and asking around to find them but when a good one is found it's
a treasure.
thats all
gary n.
