Thanks Peter, that's kind of what it sounded like. There no instructions so
I didn't know anything about running it dry, but I guess it would have taken
a few seconds for the coolant to reach the pump.

I seem to remember that these water pumps had a carbon seal, and should be
run dry for a few seconds so they seat. Perhaps that is what you were
hearing and they have now seated.
