=C2=A0In sounds like this is a=C2=A0 J type overdrive whereas I would have =
thought that it would be an A type.=C2=A0 I say this because messing about =
with the pump on an A type would not necessarily change the oil pressure wh=
ereas on a J type it would.=C2=A0 The pressure on a A type is controlled by=
the accumulator piston spring. I don't=C2=A0no whether=C2=A0you can get 50=
0 psi on an old A type overdrive. The overdrive is not working properly bec=
ause the brake ring is slipping. I think that the=C2=A0pistons that apply t=
he force to the brake ring may be leaking.=C2=A0 Just because the pressure =
relief valve=C2=A0 on the pump has be reseated doesn't mean the relief pres=
sure is correct. The spring might be weak.=C2=A0 I strongly suggest that yo=
u read the overdrive information on the Buckeye web site.=20

Transmission update - for those reading about this for the first time, this=
is a 1960 TR3 with a TR4 OD transmission. Yesterday they said it's basical=
ly a TR250 transmission. The whole transmission and OD was rebuilt by=C2=A0=
a British car specialist of 40+ years. =C2=A0His employee has also been wor=
king on British cars for years, and is a transmission specialist. =C2=A0The=
y've rebuilt literally 100s of transmissions and ODs. =C2=A0They had 4 OD c=
ores on their bench as they were showing me different parts of the system.
Symptom -=C2=A0when I'm accelerating and flip the switch for OD, it doesn't=
go into OD until I let up. =C2=A0When in 2-3 or 4th gear, OD engaged, and =
punch it, it will downshift like an automatic transmission while I accelera=
te, then shift back into OD when I let up.
I'm not technical enough to know how to describe all what they told me, but=
I'll try. =C2=A0First off, I forwarded the comments when I posted this iss=
ue a couple of weeks=C2=A0ago, and keep in mind it's not the easy/obvious t=
hings. =C2=A0They've checked all the electrical, solenoids, ground, oil typ=
e, etc. =C2=A0When in OD it's not slipping. =C2=A0They've tested the PSI wi=
th a gauge attached while driving down the expressway, and jacked up with t=
he wheels off the ground. =C2=A0
The issue is that it's not getting high enough PSI. =C2=A0It's over 400 PSI=
, but it needs to be 490 to over 500, I think they said 520. =C2=A0They've =
taken the transmission back out, taken the OD all apart, and there's nothin=
g obvious. They've changed the piston in the pump. Originally it had a pump=
that would shift softer because I've got a torquey engine and the other pu=
mp, which they called a competition pump, would be hard on the differential=
, but they've got that one in the car now. =C2=A0 They showed me a seal tha=
t goes around that piston and said the new seals=C2=A0are=C2=A0rubber and t=
hey got one like the original style that has some sort of metal reinforceme=
nt in it to hopefully make a better seal. =C2=A0Not very clear I know, but =
hopefully that=C2=A0makes sense. =C2=A0They've checked the seats where a sm=
all ball bearing must make a perfect seal, they all look perfect. =C2=A0The=
y said everything looks absolutely pristine. =C2=A0No scoring down passagew=
ays that might not allow maximum PSI, etc. =C2=A0They also showed me the li=
ning on a=C2=A0Sun gear they had on the beach, and said mine looked good an=
d the rivets looked original.=C2=A0They put it all back together, went for =
a test drive, and that didn't fix it.
They've spent literally 20+ hours on this transmission, plus several more h=
ours doing internet research on the problem. =C2=A0As they described everyt=
hing and what they've checked, which seems like everything, I said I'd send=
out this email to the list. =C2=A0Not that they haven't tried everything, =
but I'm hoping there may be one little nugget of info they haven't tried, o=
r a test they can run, that will=C2=A0lead to the solution.
Thanks,
Rye Livingston
