Fluid there means the master needs to be rebuilt or replaced.

Dark fluid means what's in there is old and dirty and needs to be totally
bled/replaced.

I can't imagine maintaining a gear box with a fill plug -- that seems
unsatisfactory now and long term.  Getting the head rounded off the plug
seems to happen to some but usually some greater persuasion (pipe wrench,
hole drilled laterally thru plug, etc) wins out.
