I used VHT vinyl dye on my TR3 seats to cover red with black back in 2008.  
There is one crease on the passenger side where it came
off fairly quickly, which probably says I didn't get the surface prepared well 
enough (maybe some Armor-All still in the crease).
Everything else still looks like it was made black.
