Andy=2C
I've actually imported 3 cars from Canada - TR6=2C an older Olds Convertibl=
e and a Jeep.=20
=20
What I did is I went down during midday Monday to Friday to talk to US Cust=
oms. The guys who know the laws (and loopholes) have seniority and at least=
one is working main shift during weekdays. A lot of the guys at the border=
don't know the rules or the proper paperwork and even if you learn all the=
right steps from the net=2C these guys can cause problems if you involve t=
hem.
=20
I went down to US Customs a couple of times and talked to different folks=
=2C explaining what I wanted to do before I did it. I eventually received t=
he correct paperwork and wrote down what I needed to do. When I heard what =
I wanted to hear from one of the folks - and he was the one who was probabl=
y the most knowledgeable=2C a straight shooter and therefore most helpful=
=2C I asked him his name and work schedule. Then I asked if he'd mind if I =
brought the car I was importing through and got him to handle the process. =
He said he would be delighted.=20
=20
So when I came across with the vehicle=2C I asked for my friendly customs a=
gent(s) by name and the process went quickly and smoothly. I did not try to=
cheat. I recall the fees change with the age of the car=2C and I don't th=
ink I had to pay anything. I think if the car is less than 25 years old (-n=
o longer the case with the TR6=2C but it was only 15 years old at the time)=
=2C it will need to meet FMVSS and EPA. Older cars are I think exempt from =
one or both. When you register the car at Secretary of State=2C take in th=
e bill of sale and import paperwork. You will have to pay 6% sales tax on t=
he purchase price at SoS.=20
=20
Anyway=2C go talk to the guys at the bridge and one of them will tell you a=
ll the rules and procedures.=20
