 In theory it would work, even on a 1000 mile tow.  Just be sure to top off
both tanks when you stop.  But for a 1000 miles it might be easier to
disconnect the driveshaft.

I wonder if, in cases of extreme need, one could simply have the engine idling
& the gearbox in neutral during the tow?  Might work for 50 miles -- not
practical of course for a 1000 mile tow.
