I can't think of a good way to do this without removing the diff.

I recently did this job, I got under and
detached the driveshaft and assessed the situation.
There is not a lot of
room to work, I don't like to take things apart if I don't have to, but I
decided it would be much easier to pull the diff than to try to do the job
with the thing in place.
Maybe there is a trick I don't know, but that was my
experience.
