I would not rule out stuck  rings at this point, either - hope fully
not rusted - but with the headgasket issue and setting for so long it
could be.

Have you checked compression?   I was lucky and the chemicals (AC
DELCO top engine cleaner) I poured into the spark plug holes loosened
things up and I got back considerable compression.
