I had the same problem and went to TR6 wheels and wider tyres. I don't have an answer for you, but one idea might be to try to get hold of the air-cooled VW crowd. I think they have the same size of tyre and they may well have some ideas. In the spare wheel well of the TR3A, I used a space saver for ease of sliding in/out.
