My TR4A developed a serious leak from the crankshaft rear seal last year.
Expert advice from the usual gurus suggested that as the engine became a bit
more worn (in my case around the 60,000 mile mark) the crankcase would be
getting pressurised from blowback past the piston rings. It was suggested
that for starters I fitted the old TR3 or 4. breather pipe to the
crankcase.
This I did, not without difficulty, and the leak was reduced to negligible
amounts.
I left the old PVC stuff in place to keep the correct look on top of the
rocker cover. I don't think it makes any difference now to the pressure in
the c/case. I don't know about the emission regulations where you live but
here in France I don't think they exist for cars of the 60's!
