Gary,

I was saddled with the same problem with my 58 3. I took an idea from my dad 
and drilled out the holes and filled them with maple dowels glued in with 
permanent wood glue. Sanded them down and finished with some varnish to 
prevent water penetration and warp. Make sure the dowels fit real tight. 

Worked great.
