I would agree with that, but I didn't find it all that difficult to remove
the smell as well. What I did was run water into the tank until it
overflowed (at the top) and let the water run until I couldn't see any signs
of fuel floating on it. Then drain and let dry in the sun. Repeat as
necessary until no smell left.
But I'd still rather not do it if there is an alternative.
