A local rebuilder recommended 50 wt. Valvoline Racing and that is
what I started with. The engagement (without using the clutch) was
very harsh and I thereafter used the clutch. The next year I put in
30 wt. Valvoline Racing and the engagement was what I think would be
"normal". That said, this is the only OD I've driven. The other thing
to keep in mind is that later (TR4A?) A type OD were redesigned for
softer engagement. So I think you can select an oil weight that suits
you. A friend has a 4A and I think he is using 50 wt. I have a 4 and
the earlier OD.
