Maybe this is too obvious an answer but the stock distributor only fits in
one way. The slot in the pedestal base is slightly offset so you can't even
put it in 180 * off. I usually rotate the rotor by hand until it drops in
the slot.

Assuming you still have the original distributor, can't you just measure
both with a micrometer?  (Shaft length, diameter, lug thickness, offset etc)
