On my TR4 I finally settled for removing the transmission cover as I never
found enough room to get the cable nut threaded back on. Another thing which
bit me, and might possibly be something you are experiencing: the replacement
cable was ever so slightly larger than the original, so it did not want to
stab into the transmission drive. If you tried to thread a new inner cable in
but found it about 1" too long that might be your trouble.
