Most likely, your cap is fine, Paul. That black plunger thing is actually
supposed to be a resistor (to reduce radio frequency interference), and its
resistance is probably too high for your continuity checker to show as
continuity. However, the high voltage that forms the spark will have no
trouble going through the resistance.
Wait until you can try it out on the real motor.
