Although not illegal as such, this might be awkward if someone did start
asking pointed questions.
Personally, I think it would practically eliminate any possibility of
problems if both the title (which as noted you are not required to carry)
and the registration (which most states do require that you carry and show
on demand) bore the same name, of someone who resides at the address shown
on both registration and title. To further eliminate any problems, I would
suggest a letter explaining that you have permission to drive the car
throughout the US and Canada, signed by the owner shown on the title &
registration.
